After 25 years in San Jose, California, my parents and younger brother moved back to Yokohama, Japan.

Moving documents specific spaces and memories left behind and returned to: the houses my parents rented in San Jose, and the Hiyoshi home that had to be sold due to my grandmother's dementia.

Empty rooms, familiar objects, and traces of my childhood and my mother's entire life become floating fragments of a family that is trying to remember and preserve, but after so many years away, how accurately? The fog of memory allows us to entertain realities that never really existed.

At the center of the book is a quiet contradiction: as my grandmother loses these memories of us and of her home, we return to it, unpack, re-live, and move away. Through these photographs, I hope to keep accurate record and feeling of the places that once were and will no longer ever be.
